OVERVIEW

Mount Mercy University's actuarial science major prepares graduates for entrance into a highly specialized, well-paid, in-demand field. Local businesses who hire recent graduates estimate average starting salaries between $60,000 and $70,000.

Students are taught to use mathematical and statistical methods to assess and price risk in areas like insurance and investments, gaining skills needed to pass the Actuarial Science Probability and Actuarial Science Financial Mathematics exams.

Core business classes offer a solid business foundation, while classes such as Investments, Risk Management, and Business Statistics give students powerful insight into problem solving, risk estimation, financial projections, and much more.

Careers in actuarial science are considered some of the most satisfying in regard to work-life balance. CNN Money, Jobs Rated Almanac, and others highlight that the combination of benefits in almost every category--work environment, employment outlook, job security, growth opportunity, and salary--makes a career as an actuary hard to beat.

INTERNSHIPS & EXPERIENCE

Experience makes a difference. Faculty guide students in finding opportunities right for them. Faculty connections with prominent companies in Eastern Iowa help students land some of the area's most sought after internships, often leading to permanent positions with investment firms, banks, and insurance companies.

Actuarial science majors can gain further experience through involvement with the Math and Computer Science Club, in which students collaborate on research with faculty, host and partake in mathematical workshops, and attend and present at regional conferences and competitions.

Students are also often members of the Investment Club, which has its own portfolio of stocks and takes trips to places and events, including the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Morningstar headquarters, New York Stock Exchange, and Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting chaired by Warren Buffet.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

All actuarial science majors must achieve a minimum grade of C- in all courses. This requirement applies equally to any course equivalents that may be accepted by transfer from any other college/university.
