'Cats look to take "home magic" on the road in 2018

By Joseph Shufelberger Chico State Sports Information
Simply put, there's no place like home for the Chico State
women's soccer team. Now, the Wildcats want to take their winning
ways on the road with them this season. Chico State has dominated opponents at University Soccer
Stadium, bringing an unbeaten streak of 14 matches (11-0-3) into
Korie Bozart
the season that dates to 2016. The Wildcats are 29-4-5 in home
matches since 2014.
Chico State finished fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) last season but earned the
same placement in the NCAA Championship Tournament's West Regional, which picks from two other conferences
as well.
"That tells you how good our conference is," Head Coach Kim Sutton said. "There's no shying away from
them."
For another successful season, the Wildcats see a simple solution for the typical, challenging conference slate.
"It's taking that home magic on the road," forward Erin Woods said. "And I think we need to figure out a way
to have the beginning of the season be like the end of the season."
A 2-4 start to CCAA play--with all four setbacks coming on the road--had the Wildcats playing catch-up last
year. A tough 0-6 stretch to open conference in 2016 did the same, but the resilient squad still finished strong to
stay above .500.
Another flourish highlighted 2017 when the Wildcats went 6-0-1 in the their final seven regular-season
matches. That finish, along with the flip in this year's schedule, has Woods seeing big things for 2018.
"I'm really excited," the senior said, "because of our homefield schedule."
The Wildcats will host the three teams--UC San Diego, Cal State LA, and Sonoma State--that finished above
them in the CCAA a year ago.
"I want to win the CCAA," Woods said. "It's making a statement if you're the winner of the CCAA."
Chico State, which was 11-6-2 last year and 7-4-1 in the CCAA, welcomes back seven starters among its
returning players.
Devon Morones and Brielynn Tovani join Woods at forward while Nicole Marquez holds down the midfield, and
Jamie Ikeda is at center back.
"It's a great core of players," said Sutton, who is in her 18th year at Chico State and has a 172-115-51 record
