Resumes v. Curriculum Vitae Both are marketing tools to present your skills, education, and experience. Resume - a summary, as of one's employment, education, etc., used in applying for a new position. Curriculum Vitae - a regular or particular course of study of or pertaining to education and life. A RESUME is a career and educational summary meant to highlight your skills and experience. A CURRICULUM VITAE is a list meant to document every relevant job and degree you have received in your life.

Curriculum Vitae Is a comprehensive biographical statement o Three or more pages o Emphasizes qualifications and activities Is often used in the field of higher education & concentrates on academic pursuits o Omit material not directly related to educational background & achievement o Most appropriate for those with advanced degrees seeking teaching or research positions. Should address faculty roles such as: o Teaching - Courses taught and developed o Research o Service o Professional associations o Publications o Presentations Job search tool ? academia Supporting document w/ a grant or contract funding proposal Requirement for annual review Requirement during application process for membership in a professional organization Background statement for an introduction to an important convention presentation

o Vary ? avoid putting dates first o Arrange entries by relevance o Example: Job Title, Employer, Location, Date Be creative ? Craft headings and subheadings that fit your experiences No complete sentences o Use descriptive phrases w/ strong action verbs. Entries should be chronologically reversed in all categories. Length is good ? most recent grads begin w/ a 2 to 4 page CV (up to 10 pages) Personal data ? contact information only Do not use objective statement Education: list only institutions from which you have a degree ? BA/BS and beyond (unless applying for community college position) GPA is usually not included, but academic honors are included

Format 11 or 12 point font 1" margins Make good use of white space so achievements do not run together Use bold, underline, capitalization to highlight information but be consistent Name ? bold and larger font Include header with name and page number on each page Do not use abbreviations or acronyms that may not be understood by individuals outside your field Most important information on left (title, organization) and less important information on right (date, city) Avoid big blocks of wordy text Do not print double-sided Print on plain, white, heavyweight paper

Organization Most relevant/compelling information near the beginning and less important information near the end Based on job description o Applying for position that emphasizes teacher over research ? teaching experience before research experience Split long lists into subcategories o If presented at many conferences, divide list of presentations into subcategories by location, topic, professional affiliation, etc. Organize entries within each section in reverse chronological order
