A FEW THOUGHTS FROM THE UNIT CHAIRMAN

by Cecelia Stacy

Stronger Together Enforcing our Contract,

Fighting for Justice United

For some of you, 2017 may have been an exceptional year and seeing it come to an end could be sad. On the other hand, some may feel relieved that it is coming to an end and the thought of you surviving yet another year makes you feel like dancing. It's deeper than what's at hand. I challenge you to look a little longer, see a little further and feel a little deeper and I'm sure you will find value in respecting what is coming to an end as much as the anticipation of a new beginning. Endings are powerful ready to attack as beginnings are refreshed endurance waiting for the new. Wishing you all greatness in your choices, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

Monday December 4th was supposed to be a scheduled negotiations day. However, the District cancelled and for that reason, we have no

updates. Our next scheduled time to meet will be Monday, December 11. This day will determine where we go from here. There may be more surveys to come. We have tried to the best of our ability and will continue working on a contract that is Fair and Just for all. We may be at a point that will force our hands to the needed support of the people and members of the board on these matter.

Building Communicators will need to get the names and shirt sizes of all members in their building. If a list of members is needed per building, please let me know.

There is a box at the Local Office for can goods and non-perishables that will go towards the support of the Women of Steel fundraiser out of Gary, Indiana. There will be a container set up at Titan collecting the same and these goods will go to a local food pantry in support of our community on behalf of the WOS (Women of Steel). Please and thank you for your support.

At our November meeting, it was stated that we would bring a dish to pass (finger foods) and break bread

together for the Holiday Season at our December 12 meeting which will be held at 4:30 in the Library of Empire School. Come sip on hot apple cider and finger foods as we are graced with a Christmas story by one of our Librarians.

ADVISORY COUNCIL Don Hill

At the November membership meeting, the topic of Advisory Committee was discussed. The makeup of the committee was the main concern; I stated that all areas of the school, meaning Para's, Cafeteria staff, Instructional Materials Technicians, and Security Monitors should all be represented and not have any one area dominate the Committee. Concerns from all areas need to be heard. The change was to be made this year but with contract negotiations taking longer than anticipated and now well into the school year, it had not been explained to membership as it should have been. Membership agreed on the philosophy; there was a motion to begin this change to the Advisory Council in the next school year. The motion passed. At this school's year end the Advisory Council will be dissolved and applications taken for a new council will be admitted to the Union. Hoping all areas will have interested members, all areas will then be

represented in the Council for the new school year 2018-2019. The application process is scheduled to begin, as discussed, in April and the selection process completed before school's end. The new council would be set and ready for the new year. I wish to thank all who participated in the meeting and the discussion we had. We can, and all need to work together to build a stronger Union.

The Negotiating Committee has been making progress. We now have only a few language issues remaining and have started the discussion of wages and other financials. Our next negotiating meeting is scheduled for December 11th.
