Only mothers who reside in LA County were selected for analysis. Therefore, non-LA hospital where mothers from LAC delivered may be included

in the Non-DHS Hospital Group.

The analysis excludes non-hospital birth, birth centers not listed in the birth record documentation, births in clinics or doctor's office, birth in transit,

births in unclassifiable locations, or out of state hospital births.

Vaginal - Other category under Method of Delivery includes vaginal-spontaneous after previous C-section, vaginal-forceps, vaginal-forceps after

previous C-section, vaginal-vacuum and vaginal after previous C-section.

*Infant mortality rate by hospital type were based on 2011 birth cohort data. The infant mortality by hospital type was calculated based on

live births that were born in the respective hospital and later died within the first year of birth.

DHS Hospital: DHS hospital is definted as Los Angeles County hospitals operated under LAC Department of Health Services.

Parity: Parity is defined as the number of pregnancies resulting in live births to a woman.

Non-smoker: Non-smokers are defined as not smoked any cigarettes three months before pregnancy, and during the first, second and third trimester as indicated in the birth record.

Overweight before pregnancy: Overweight before pregnancy is defined as Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25 and less than 30 before pregnancy.

Obese before pregnancy: Obese before pregnancy is defined as Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 before pregnancy.

Low birthweight: Infant weighing less than 2,500 grams at birth.

Preterm birth: Preterm live birth is defined as live births occurring at less than 37 weeks of gestation and greater than or equal to 17 weeks.

Infant mortality rate: Infant mortality rate is defined as deaths occurring less than 365 days per 1,000 live births.
