2009-10 indiana WOMEN'S GOLF

2008-09 SEASON IN REVIEW

HOOSIERS FINISH SIXTH AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP

? Sitting in 10th after one round, the Hoosiers made a furious rally to earn a sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Championship, April 24-26 at Purdue University-Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. ? Battling fierce winds and a tough course, the Hoosiers shot 332 as a team in the first round with not a single player breaking 80. ? Round two was a different story as the first day closed with a round of 317, led by a 74 from Anita Gahir. Laura Nochta also posted a round of 79. ? The Hoosiers showed improvement on day two with a round of 315, this time led by a round of 77 from Kellye Belcher. Amber Lindgren shot a 78, with Gahir posting a 79. The 315 was tied for the third lowest round of the day. ? Indiana closed out play with its best performance of the weekend, posting a 302 in the fourth round. Cecilia Orevik posted the low round of the tournament for IU with a 72, while Belcher added her best round with a 75. Lindgren had a 77, with Gahir and Nochta each recording scores of 78. ? Gahir was the top Hoosier finisher, placing ninth with a total of 311 (80-74-79-78). ? Belcher tied for 32nd (85-86-77-75=323), as did Lindgren (82-86-78-77=323) and Nochta (85-79-81-78=323). ? Orevik finished tied for 42nd at her first Big Ten Championship (86-82-85-72=325), while Lauren Giesecke tied for 61st in her first championship apperance (85-82-92-81=340).

GAHIR, NOCHTA EARN SECOND-TEAM ALL-BIG TEN RECOGNITION

? At the conclusion of the Big Ten Championship, it was announced that Anita Gahir and Laura Nochta were selected to the All-Big Ten second team. ? This is the second-straight year that Gahir has been named to the second team, while it is the first Big Ten honor for Nochta. ? Gahir finished the year with a stroke average of 78.23 over 30 rounds, ranking second on the team. ? Her top finish of the year came at the Mountain View Invitational where she tied for third, including a career-best round of 67. ? Nochta led the Hoosiers with a stroke average of 78.10 over 30 rounds of play. ? She picked up her first career victory at the Lady Puerto Rico Invitational in February.

FIVE NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN

? Hoosiers Kellye Belcher, Anita Gahir, Lauren Giesecke, Amber Lindgren and Laura Nochta were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team for the 2008-09 season. ? Lindgren earned the honor for the third time in her career, while Belcher, Gahir and Nochta are now two-time honorees. Giesecke earned the award in her first season of eligibility. ? In order to be eligible for the Big Ten honor, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in her second year at the institution.

HOOSIERS HAVE RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE AT LAS VEGAS COLLEGIATE SHOWDOWN

? The fall ended on the right foot for the Hoosiers as they shot a schoolrecord 277 in the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, where they finished 10th as a team. ? That beat the old mark of 284 set at the NCAA Championships in 1998. In addition, the team also set the record for two-round (568) and threeround (860) scores. ? Individually, Anita Gahir tied the school record with a 67 in that final round. Teammate Kellye Belcher became the 13th Hoosier to record a round under 70 with a 69 in the final round.

NEWS AND NOTES

? Indiana posted top-10 finishes in nine of 10 tournaments this year. ? The top team performance came at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, March 16-18 in Hawai'i where they placed third with a score of 917. ? The Hoosiers' second of two tournament scores under 900 came at the Mountain View Collegiate, where they finished fourth with a score of 884. ? Two freshmen made their debut for Indiana this year, with Sara Poppas competing in three events, and Emily Habbel taking part in the IU Invitational. ? Poppas' low round of the year came in the third round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational when she fired a 77. ? Senior Amber Lindgren tied her career best with a round of 73 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown and the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. ? Indiana was No. 55 in the final regular season GolfWeek poll.

NOCHTA FINISHES FIRST AT LADY PUERTO RICO CLASSIC

? It was an historic performance for Laura Nochta at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in February as she picked up her first career win, finishing tied for first. ? Nochta's 73 in the third round tied her for the low round of the day with six other golfers. Her three-round total of 219 (72-74-73) gave her a share of the individual tournament title along with Purdue's Maria Hernandez, the two-time Big Ten and 2009 NCAA champion. ? The Hoosiers finished 14th as a team with a total of 937 (318-311-308). ? For her efforts, Nochta was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week on Feb. 11.
