The Non-GMO Project offers North America's only third party verification for products produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance. In addition to comprehensive traceability and segregation requirements, the Project also mandates testing of all ingredients at risk for GMO contamination. In alignment with the threshold required by law in the EU, all Non-GMO Project verified ingredients must test below 0.9%

While absence claims such as "GMO Free" are not scientifically or legally defensible, our "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal offers a guarantee to you that everything possible has been done to keep GMOs out of the product. Products listed here are enrolled in the Non-GMO Project's Product Verification Program and are considered Official Participants. Enrolled products are in the process of being verified, but have not yet been deemed fully compliant with the Non-GMO Project Standard (this often takes a few months). NON-GMO SHOPPING TIPS

The following crops carry risk of being genetically engineered, because engineered varieties of

these crops are grown large scale in North America and certain other parts of the world. These

crops may not be used in Non-GMO Project approved products unless verified as compliant

with the Non-GMO Project Standard:

Rice (from China, starting in 2009)

Canola

Soy

Corn

Sugar Beets

Cotton

Zucchini and yellow summer squash

Papaya

The following is a non-exhaustive list of derivatives with high GMO risk that are commonly used in food production. It is meant to provide examples of materials that are considered highrisk in the Non-GMO Project Product Verification Program. The following inputs may not be used unless verified as compliant with the Non-GMO Project Standard:

Amino Acids Aspartame Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbate, Vitamin C Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate Ethanol Flavofings, "natural" and "artificial" Hydrolized Vegetable Protein Lactic Acid

Maltodextrins Microbial growth media Molasses Monosodium Glutamate Sucrose Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) Xanthan Gum Vitamins Yeast Products

Animal derivatives such as milk, meat, eggs, honey and other bee products, are also considered high-risk by the Non-GMO Project Standard, because of potential GMO contamination in feed and other inputs.

If a product contains any of the above items, your best assurance that the manufacturer has followed best practices of GMO avoidance for the product to be listed in this shopping guide. Many brands make non-GMO claims based on their certified organic status. While this is a good guarantee that GMOs weren't intentionally used, organic certification does not require testing of GMO-risk ingredients.
